From Valleys to Victory

Howdy, Zack here.

Are you navigating a challenging valley in life right now? Are things not going as planned? Do you feel stuck and overwhelmed? These moments can be tough, to say the least. I know. I've been there. We all have. But they also offer profound lessons and opportunities for incredible growth.

Whether you follow a particular faith or not, the wisdom found in Biblical teachings and Stoic philosophy can offer valuable guidance through these difficult times. They emphasize resilience, clarity, and purposeful action on how to navigate the valleys.

In Psalm 23:4, we read, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” This verse highlights that valleys are not permanent destinations but temporary paths supported and guided by faith. Stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius also taught that trials are a natural part of life and a chance to build character and wisdom.

When we apply our Top Teams teachings during these valleys, we can turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

Here’s how you can use the 6 S’s of Top Leaders to go from stuck to scaling:

  1. SOLIDIFY | Build Strong Foundations
    Biblical Teaching:
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus tells the parable of the wise builder, emphasizing that a house built on a solid foundation withstands storms. This story teaches the importance of building strong foundations in our lives and work to endure challenges.
Stoic Reference: Epictetus taught that our inner strength and focus on what we can control are crucial for resilience. Building a solid inner foundation helps us remain stable despite external uncertainties.
Application to Top Teams: Assess your core values and strengths. Ensure your team's roles and goals are clear, and foster a supportive culture that aligns with your purpose. By solidifying your foundations, you can better navigate challenges and remain steadfast to your vision.
  2. STRATEGIZE | Plan & Iterate
    Biblical Teaching:
Proverbs 21:5 states, “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” This verse underscores the value of careful planning and adapting strategies to achieve success.
Stoic Reference: Stoics like Seneca emphasized the importance of thoughtful preparation and the flexibility to adapt plans as circumstances change. This practice helps us handle life’s uncertainties effectively.
Application to Top Teams: Plan ahead and be ready to adjust your strategies based on feedback and data. Flexibility and informed decision-making are key to overcoming obstacles and seizing opportunities.
  3. SIMPLIFY | Reduce Complexity
    Biblical Teaching:
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “To everything, there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” This verse encourages us to focus on what truly matters and avoid unnecessary complexity.
Stoic Reference: Marcus Aurelius advocated for simplicity in thought and action. A clear and uncluttered approach helps reduce stress and enhances our ability to make progress.
Application to Top Teams: Eliminate unnecessary complexities and streamline your processes. Focus on what is essential to make progress more manageable and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  4. STICK w/ it | Plan Our Work / Work Our Plan
    Biblical Teaching:
Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” This verse highlights the importance of perseverance and commitment to our plans.
Stoic Reference: The Stoic principle of perseverance teaches us to maintain focus and determination despite challenges. Consistent effort and resilience lead to eventual success.
Application to Top Teams: Stay committed to your plans and hold yourself accountable. Continuously learn from your experiences and maintain your efforts to achieve long-term success.
  5. SHAPE | Lead the Way
    Biblical Teaching:
Philippians 4:13 states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse encourages us to lead with integrity and trust in our strength.
Stoic Reference: Stoicism emphasizes leading by example and maintaining personal virtue. By setting high standards for ourselves and others, we build trust and credibility.
Application to Top Teams: Lead by example with consistency and integrity. Shape the direction of your team and projects through strong leadership and ethical practices.
  6. SERVE | Our Circle of Impact
    Biblical Teaching:
Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.” This verse emphasizes the importance of serving others and making a positive impact.
Stoic Reference: Stoic philosophers highlighted the value of contributing positively to the community and focusing on service to others. Serving others aligns with our purpose and strengthens our impact.
Application to Top Teams: Focus on how you serve and impact others. Strive to provide exceptional value and care, enhancing your Circle of Impact and contributing positively to those around you.

Howdy, Zack here. Stop it. Stop doing the things that aren't working for you. Sound too simple? Well, it's not. It's one of the hardest things to do. Yet, funny enough, once you've done it, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. You know what's not working for you. Ugh, lump in my throat. I have a few that come to mind right now. It might be eating too much, not working out, wasting time on social media, getting caught up in drama, focusing on big world issues (like politics), or pretty...

Howdy, Zack here. I love you. Yes, you. And, that love is not conditional. We all have our faults. I know when I've been at my worst, that I need others' love the most. Unless you've been living under a rock or you've intentionally disconnected (can't blame you), you've seen the effect of deliberate division — the recent assassination attempt on former President Trump. No matter your political beliefs, this sort of hatred has no place in our world. It stems from the polarization of our...

Howdy, Zack here. When will it be time? We often wait for that perfect 'when' — the moment everything falls into place. But what if 'when' is actually right now? As a dad of triplets on the brink of their senior year, time feels more precious than ever. Everything has been one-and-done for us. Before long, my wife, Gwen, and I will be seeing our 3 off to college. Thus, each moment matters more. Can you relate? When certain chapters come to an end, we tend to feel the gravity of our decisions...
