How We Scale

πŸ§‘β€πŸš€ Here's What it Really Means to Scale

Howdy, Zack here.

Welcome to the 1st How We Scale weekly letter. Thanks for joining me!

What does it actually mean to scale? πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

Well, my son's bearded dragon, Sally, has an armor of spiky scales. And my girls like to warm up their vocals by singing scales. I might even weigh myself on my bathroom scale if I'm curious enough. But, of course, that's not the type of 'scale' I'm talking about.

Instead, we'll focus on the newer use of the word scale, which Merriam-Website shows in their article on 'Words We're Watching', with this definition, "to grow or expand in a proportional and usually profitable way".

Yet, it's also quite intriguing that the earliest use of the word scale goes back to Medieval Latin: scalare (climb) and later Latin: scala (ladder).

In each week's letter, How We Scale, we'll talk about both the organizations and the people that build them β€” because scaling involves both a ladder and people climbing it. When we step on the ladder, we bring our full selves. With each step up, we gain a greater view of the landscape in front of us. With each slip of a step, we learn to hold on and climb more diligently.

Businesses don't scale on their own.

Scaling comes from each person within the organization being intentional about their climb. We scale personally and professionally. We scale our businesses, and we scale our lives.

Sometimes we fall off the ladder. I've done that; a few times. And it hurts. Quite badly. But I'm grateful for those falls as they've given me a gift that I can now share with you. I now climb with more intentionality, purpose, and direction. I climb for the challenge. I climb because it's more fun than sitting at the bottom of the ladder. I climb to see the beautiful view that each new rung of the ladder brings. Will you join me?
