How We Scale

It's Time to Clean Things Up.

Howdy, Zack here.

Ever feel like life’s just a little too much? You know what I mean—the juggling act of endless to-do lists that never seem to shrink, and the struggle to figure out what to tackle next. It’s like you’re a master juggler, but instead of feeling in control, you’re just waiting for the moment everything comes crashing down. What used to be exhilarating has turned into a chore, and you find yourself running on a hamster wheel, getting nowhere fast.

I’ve been there, too. When I hit that point, it’s a clear sign that something’s got to give. I’m all about sticking with what matters and staying laser-focused on my goals—something I’ve shared plenty about in past How We Scale letters and through my coaching in Top Teams. But when it comes to being overloaded, it’s not about commitment; it’s about overcommitting.

I remember a time when my wife, Gwen, suggested I might be 'a tad too involved' in community boards. You see, I was juggling so many roles: raising young triplets, helping grow the local Ed Foundation, coaching two soccer teams, and holding a board position for our soccer club. Not to mention volunteering at church and running my company—all while being the best husband and dad I could be.

In my head, I was superhuman. For a while, I managed to keep all the balls in the air. But soon enough, things started slipping through the cracks. Work fell off track, my commitments became half-hearted, and the things that truly mattered—my faith, my family, and my health—were getting shortchanged.

So, what do you do when you reach that point of “it’s all too much”?

Simply put, you clean things up.

Here's how I do it:

3 WAYS

  • Stop.
I know, I know—easier said than done. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you must hit pause.
  • Take a Step Back.
Get a top-down view of your life. What’s working? What’s not? Decide what stays and what goes.
  • Make Tough Decisions.
Identify what’s truly important and stick with it. Don’t be afraid to let go of commitments that drain you.

Just Remember:
When you find yourself in that overwhelmed state, take a moment to stop, step back, and tackle those tough decisions. Trust me, once you do, you’ll feel like a huge weight has been lifted. You’ll see that what matters most gets the attention it deserves, and you’ll be surprised at how things begin to flourish.

3 FAVES:

  1. ✏️ Workflowy — Jot it all down
  2. 👨‍💻 Notion — Organize it
  3. ✔️ Ninety — Execute well

Until next Wednesday, take a moment to declutter your life and focus on what matters most!
