How We Scale

Who Cares What They Think?

Howdy, Zack here.

How often do you worry about what 'they' think and how does that tend to affect your decision-making?

Ugh. I have some regrets.

I can rewind my business history and think of many instances where I let the opinions of “experts,” mentors, and even family sway me. Not that their advice wasn’t valid; sometimes it was. But letting fear dictate my actions often did more harm than good. Like the time I hesitated to buy 1,000 bitcoins for $1,000 because a financial friend said it was stupid. Kind of a silly example, but I still wish I'd trusted my gut. Yet, it’s often the smaller daily decisions that matter most.

So how can you feel better about your gut instincts?

At the present moment, it can feel like others are smarter than you and have all the knowledge. When you give them too much respect, you often fail to trust your gut instinct. You're the one in the game, right now, right here, and you know it best.

That said, you don’t know everything either.

Haha. I know I'm going back and forth and not giving you a clear answer. But, that's just it. You have to wrestle with it. You have to weigh the feedback, advice, and fears, and consider whether your gut feeling holds merit.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and the Captain goes down with the ship.

So, either let the weight of the crown cause your head to hang low. Or, stand strong, make bold decisions, and give it your best no matter how challenging the situation. Do weigh all factors, but in the end, my recommendation is to trust your gut.

How can feel better about your gut instincts?

3 WAYS

  • What Does Your Gut Instinct Tell You:
Write it down. Is it driven by fear or is it an honest assessment?
  • Listen Openly:
Challenge your thoughts with perspectives from trusted peers and mentors.
  • Make a Decision:
If your gut instinct is strong, but fear holds you back, take informed 'gut' based action.

Just Remember:
'They' will always have advice and differing opinions, which should help inform you and challenge you. But don't be weak when making decisions on your best course of action. Trust your gut instinct more often than not.

Until next Wednesday, focus less on what 'they' say and more on what you know deep down.
